History of chovghan in Azerbaijan

Chovghan competitions that is a team kind of sport, was formed in the first millennium of our era, was very popular in Azerbaijan, Middle Asia, Iran, Turkey, Iraq and neighbor countries for hundred years. The sources show in Baghdad, which was the cultural center of Islamic world in XII century, the first international chovghan competitions were held for the first time in the history among jockeys from the Middle East countries. Existence of chovghan competitions in Azerbaijan and its popularity in ancient times is proved by the real facts. In the course of archeological digs in Orangala the plate with the image in the bottom describing chovghan game proves obviously spreading of this game in the city of Beylagan in IX century. It can be seen from the work "Khosrov ve Shirin" of great Nizami and "Kitabi-Dede Korkud" that the history of chovghan in Azerbaijan comes to even VI-VII centuries, who knows, perhaps, even to the earlier periods.

One of the facts proving that Chovghan is one of the ancient Azeri games is that there are lots of works describing this game, there is information in the written sources how the game should have been conducted. The spreading and development of the game of Chovghan, the same as all other kinds of sport based in the East, to the further regions of the world was realized by the English. So, in XIX century this game brought from India to England was developing gradually and started spreading throughout America and European countries on the basis of new rules.

By the initiative of the English this game was included under the name of "polo" in the program of II Olympic Games held in Paris in 1900. So, this name was amended into the Western civilization. 5 polo team representing three countries were participating in Paris.

In the Middle Ages Azerbaijan was one of the leading states from the cultural development, scientific potential standpoint in the powerful and eminent with the greatness Islamic world. Along with sciences such as the philosophy, medicine, astronomy, mathematics, music, literature, fine arts, the chess that is an intellectual kind of sport was also wide-spread. The chess had turned into one of the favorite entertainment at the palaces of Azeri shahs. There were number of women playing the chess in Azerbaijan.

Eminent Azeri poetess Mahsati Ganjavi living in XII century was also good chess-player. In the works of her contemporaries this fact, i.e. information that Mahsati khanim was a skilful chess-player can be found. The writings on chess parties of Mahsati Ganjavi have reached our period. Chess playing of the women in Azerbaijan has continued as a tradition. In XIX century French writer Alexander Duma being in Azerbaijan played chess with the daughter of Garabagh khan, famous Azeri poet Khurshudbanu Natavan, was impressed with wonderful playing of Natavan.

We can make a conclusion having unified the thoughts over the history of Azeri sport that the sport in the country possesses very ancient history. Watching the material culture found in the course of archeological digs as well as ancient written monuments, fine art works, literature-historical sources, folklore, samples of the artistic culture of the Middle Ages, it can be said that such kinds of sport as wrestling, arrow-shooting, fencing, javelin throwing, jockey, Chivghan, Surpapag, Baharband, stone-raising, needle playing, chess and other were wide-spread in ancient Azerbaijan. This sports tradition existing in the country through the history has been saved in different kinds of sport, has reached the present days.
