Azeri sportsmen in international competitions

In the second mid of twenties Azeri sportsmen started participating in the international competitions. Yes, these competitions were of local feature and realized as the friendly meetings with the sportsmen of other countries.

Tradition of conduction of international football meetings in Baku has revived these years again. In November 1926 in Baku football meetings with the combined team of Teheran city of Iran were organized. Three different teams of Baku met with the guess. In 1929 the response visit was paid to Iran.

The first international meeting of Azeri boxers took place with the national combined team of Turkey in 1929. Those years more experienced Turkish won (3,5:1,5) but in two years in the next meeting our boxers played a considerable victory (5:0).

In 1930 Azeri boxers were among the leading boxers of the Soviet Union. Upon institution of the union sportive classification, several boxers of our republic had gained the name of master of sports. Among them L.Kayurov (1936), N.Kitasov (1937-1938), country champions A.Agalarov, I.Ashumov, A.Nikolayev, A.Barishev, Y.Abdullayev won the awards in the union championships, joined combined team of the USSR.

In 1931 light athletes of Azerbaijan took part in the competitions held in Moscow to take part in the sports and athletics meetings in Berlin. In those competitions A.Semyanisti took the third place. Light athletes of Azerbaijan had achieved high goals in the light athletics competitions over Trans-Caucasus held in Baku in 1934. 18 out of 35 Trans-Caucasus records belonged to Azeri light athletes. In 1934 Azeri light athletes held four union records in the short-distance running.

Beginning of the Second World War resulted in sending majority of Azeri sportsmen to the front. As a result of it, the attention to the development of sport in 1941-1945 had decreased. In spite of this, sportive sections, sportive specialists being in back front continued their work. Those years heavy athlete of Azerbaijan Ahmad Mammadoglu demonstrated extra-ordinary sportive selflessness. As a result of gangrene received in the war in 1942, and in spite of loosing paws of both legs, he continued going in for heavy athletics and in 1943 in USSR championship he took the second place. In 1944 in USSR championship over the heavy athletics Ahmad Mammadoglu had become a winner. In a year, he renewed the USSR record, in 1946 he renewed the world record.

Native of Azeri light athletics school G.Ganeker was a winner of the USSR championship three years one by one among the women in high jump - in 1943, 1944, 1945.

After the war, the sport in Azerbaijan had started developing intensively again. Country sportsmen were able to increase their skillfulness. In 1948 the wrestler Rashid Mammadbayov took the second place in the USSR championship, Musa Babayev took the first place in the Trade Union championship. In a year our wrestler Ibrahimpasha Dadashov had become a USSR champion.

In the second Students World Games after the war Musa Babayev was the first. Broad jumper Khandadash Madatov took awardable place. Among the powerful student sportsmen were free-style wrestlers M.Dadashov, disc-thrower Y.Arzumanova, swimmer N.Mantsev, boxer V.Golubenko, sprinter Y.Konovalov. Baku's light athletes I.Papkov, S.Nenashev, Kh.Madatov, thrower A.Udachin won the country and world records. Majority of those sportsmen had become participants of the Olympic Games in 1952.

Azeri sportsmen were awarded with larger number of the medals in 1951. The wrestler Musa Babayev, volleyball player Vladlen Busalayev, hammer-thrower Nikolay Shorin were awarded with the gold medals inside the USSR combined team in III Students World Games conducted in Berlin.

In the revival of the sport development in the republic in the years after the war big role was played by the sportive-educational centers. Already in 1930 in Baku Trans-Caucasian Physical Culture Institute was opened in Baku training the specialists over the physical culture in Trans-Caucasus. The institute turned into Azerbaijan State Physical Culture Institute in 1936. In 1933 Physical Culture Technical School was opened under the Institute. The Technical School was moved to another city of the republic in 1936 to Shaki and was working there till the World War. After the war, these educational institutions had strengthened their activity.

After the war construction and reconstruction of the sportive objects had speeded up as well. The works over construction of the republican stadium ceased in the years of civil war restarted.

In 1951 republican stadium equipped with the modernist equipment was put into exploitation. It gave new impulse to the mass development of the sport in the republic.

In 1951 National Olympic Committee of the USSR was established and the committee was recognized by International Olympic Committee. Soviet Union team was allowed to take part in the Olympic Games. In 1952 Soviet combined team participating in Helsinki Games was represented by five Azeri sportsmen. Along with it, several sportsmen being native of Azeri sportive school left for Helsinki in the membership of team as Russian representatives.

In 1952 in Helsinki Azeri sportsmen won one silver and one bronze medal. These were the first Olympic medals of the country. Since that Olympiad, Azeri sportsmen were participating in all Olympic Games excluding Los-Angeles Games in 1984.

Joining of the Soviet Union to the Olympic Games resulted in consequent organization and conduction of another, new form of the complex competitions at the union level. In 1956 the first sports and athletics meeting of the USSR nations was held. Fifteen ally sportsmen being inside the Soviet Union were fighting for the victory in the competitions those years. The sports and athletes meeting was looking like small Olympic Games conducted among fifteen republics. In the first sports and athletics meetings 372 sportsmen from Azerbaijan were represented at 20 kinds of sport. In the team playing Azerbaijan took 10th place. Azeri water polo sportsmen took the third place, dive and free-style wrestling teams took the 6th place. In the sports and athletes meeting light athletes won the medals in hammer jump, distance jump with three throws, 100 m distance running, 4x100 distance relay race. Our sportsmen returned to Motherland with the medals in stand shooting. In all sports and athletes meeting conducted after that Azeri team had always participated actively and won medals on number of kinds of sport.
