In 1992 Azeri National Olympic Committee was established. Azerbaijan couldn't represent itself as an independent state in XXV Summer Olympic Games held in Barcelona that year. Because the committee was established and recognized by the International Olympic Committee after the license competitions had come to the end. This time five sportsmen of the country had to participate in the membership of the combined team of the Commonwealth of Independent States. So, Barcelona Olympic Games have become new stage in the history of our sport. In these Games Azeri flag was raised, Azeri anthem was sounded. After Barcelona Games Olympic Committee had expanded sphere of its activity, joined actively International Olympic Movement. It is known that Olympic Movement isn't limited only with the participation in the Olympic Games. Conduction of various measures connected with the Olympic movement in the country was necessary.

In 1994 president of the International Olympic Committee Chuan Antonio Samaranch, President of the National Olympic Commitees Association Mario Vaskes Rana, President of European Olympic Committee Jacque Rogge arrived in Azerbaijan to get familiar with the situation of Olympic Movement propaganda in the country, activity of the National Olympic Committee. Azeri President Heydar Aliyev received them. Exchange of views on the real condition, its development perspectives was conducted in the reception.

As a whole, the works in the activity of Azeri National Olympic Committee in 1992-1997 covered participation in European Youth Olympic Days, conduction of International Marathon Days in Baku. The most important event specified for this period was joining of Azerbaijan as an independent state for the first time to the Olympic Games. In realization of this historical event Azeri President Heydar Aliyev played a big role. Decree on preparation to the Atlanta Games, maintenance of preparation under the state control, attention and care towards the sportsmen gave its fruits. Azerbaijan was represented in Atlanta by 23 sportsmen and won one silver medal.

It must be said that the works carried out in the first five-year period of the activity of Azeri National Olympic Committee as a whole weren't established at the required level and couldn't be considered satisfactory. It was required to create fundamental turnover in the work. Supreme Assembly of the National Olympic Committee held on 31 July 1997 determined new board of directors. Ilham Aliyev was selected new president of the National Olympic Committee. Activity directions of the Committee were determined.

If we look through Azeri National Olympic Committee's last ten-year activity, it can be divided into two five-year periods differing from each other strongly, considerably. Chronology of the works carried out proves it obviously. In the first mid Olympic Movement was studied, its role in international scale was evaluated, no initiative was carried out. Activity was limited with participation in some events of the International and continental Olympic Committee. Neither beyond the country, nor in the republic existence of Azerbaijan national Olympic Committee was felt.
