Soviet Union participated at the Olympic Games for the second time. By the eve of the Olympiad on August of 1956 the USSR Nation Spartakiad was held with the aim to form the membership of the national team. The preparation level of Soviet athletes was examined once more.

Azerbaijani athlete Yuri Konovalov's results on athletics were higher in the Spartakiad which was held in Moscow. He reached the final on 100m run distance events. Thus, Azerbaijani athlete was included to the composition of the national Olympic team of the Soviet Union.

Yuri Konovalov who represented our republic in Melbourne failed in 200m relay events and came out of the first round of the competition.

Athlete from Baku participated successfully in 4x100m relay event. Participating together with L. Bartenyev, V. Tokarev and V. Sukha-revich in relay the team having shown result 39.88 took the second place. That was 0,3 seconds minor the World and Olympic record shown by the USA athletes. So, our athlete returned the Motherland with silver medal. That was the third medal taken by athletes of Azerbaijan at the Olympic Games.
