XVII Summer Olympic Games were held in the ancient capital of Italy Rome. In the composition of 245 soviet athletes there were two representatives from Azerbaijan - Yuri Konovalov silver prize winner of the Melbourne Olympics and water polo player Yevgeny Saltsin started to Rome from Azerbaijan.
Soviet water polo players competed in group competitions with teams from German, Argentina, Brazil. In the first game USSR national team met with German team. The game that was held in strenuous fight condition ended with a score 5:4 in Soviet team's favor. In the following games soviet athletes won victory over Argentine team with a score 7:4, Brazil with a score 8:2.
Soviet water polo players having successfully finished group stage was defeated only by Italians in the final and took the silver medal of the Olympiad. Azeri athlete Yevgeny Saltsinin had a great role in the gaining of that medal.
Competitions on athletics, princess of sport, began on August 31. Azerbaijani athlete Yuri Konovalov repeated his Melbourne result. Yuri Konovalov, Gusman Kosanov, Leonid Berten-yev, Edven Ozolin in 4x100 relay events reached the final stage the second. That was Yuri Konovalov's second Olympic medal. Thus, number of medals obtained by the Azerbaijani athletes in three Olympic Games reached five. Four of those medals were silver and one bronze.
