XVIII Summer Olympic Games were held in the sun eastern country, Japan. The opening ceremony of the Olympiad took place on 10th October. Six athletes from our republic - volley-ball player Inna Riscal, pentathlonist Victor Mineyev, classic style wrestler A. Sayadov, free style wrestler Aydin Ibrahimov, water polo players Nicolay Kuznetsov and Zenon Bortkevich were in the composition of the Soviet team in Tokyo Games.
Two Azerbaijani athletes played in the composition of the USSR water polo team in Japan. Having shown rather low results in comparison with previous Olympiad water polo team took the third place. Azerbaijan water polo players Nicolay Kuznetsov and Zenon Bortkevich took bronze medal of the XVIII Summer Olympic Games.
Victor Mineyev in pentathlon showed top result among the Azerbaijani athletes. In accordance with the gained points he became the first and with 198 scores took gold medal. That was the first gold medal of Azerbaijani athletes won at the Olympic Games.
Athlete of Azerbaijan Inna Riscal was also a member of the USSR women volleyball national team in Tokyo Games in 1964. Inna was regarded as the strongest player of the Soviet team. She proved it in this competition. Soviet volleyball players lost the final set of the game to host and gained silver of the Olympic Games. Inna had exceptional role in gaining of that medal.
Representative of Azerbaijan wrestling school Aydin Ibrahimov having taken the third place in competitions among the bantamweight category athletes on freestyle wrestling gained bronze medal.
