Three athletes from Azerbaijan were members of the team representing Soviet Union at the XIX Summer Olympic Games. Two of three athletes performed in the USSR women national volleyball team. Another athlete of Azerbaijan tried her strength at the Olympic Games on diving events held among women.

In women volleyball team there were well-known volleyball players from Azerbaijan, Inna Riscal and Vera Lantratova, who having performed successfully in group and semi final competitions gained a card to the final. As it was in previous Olympics women volleyball team played again with Japanese athletes. Japan volleyball players performed in previous Olympiad in their country; for this time they had no enough fans and support in Mexico. Besides, soviet volleyball players showed that they were stronger than in previous game. The perfect and confident performance of soviet athletes destroyed the myth about "Japan typhoon". And Japan journalists named Azerbaijani athlete Inna Riscal "Caspian thunder". USSR team having won victory over Japan team that was considered unbeatable became the Olympic champion. Thus, Azerbaijani volleyball players Inna Riscal and Vera Lantratova returned the Motherland as Olympic champions.

Azerbaijani athlete for the first time competing in diving competitions discipline was included to the programme of the Olympic Games. However, Nadejda Karpukhina could not gain high result and was sufficed with 22nd place. Thus, the fact of development and promotion of different sport disciplines in Azerbaijan was proved once more.
