Three athletes from Azerbaijan took part in Munich Olympiad. Those athletes were the captain of the USSR women national team, Olympic champion Inna Riscal, track and field athlete Alexandr Kornelyuk, and a swimmer Vladimir Krivtsov.

Women volleyball team in the composition of which performed Inna Riscal participated in group competitions successfully as it was in previous Olympiad.

Soviet volleyball players won victory in the semi final and reached the final. In this Olympiad in the final stage of women volleyball competitions Soviet volleyball players met with Japanese team. It was the third Olympics in which two teams held the fight for the gold in the final. Up to that competitions Japanese gained the victory in the first, soviet athletes in the second competitions. Strenuous game took place in the final in Munich. That game lasted 2 hours 48 minuets. No one of teams wanted to lose the game. They competed for the victory stubbornly. Inna Riscal captain of the soviet team showed a perfect game in that competition. The game ended in soviet volleyball players' favor. Inna Riscal acquired the title of the Olympic champion for the second time. Total number of her Olympic medals became three. Two of those medals were gold and a bronze.

A representative of the Azerbaijan athletics school a sprinter Alexandr Kornelyuk competed in two disciplines. He reached the final on 100m relay and occupied the 6th place, on 4x100m relay event took silver medal.
