XXI Summer Olympic Games were held on American continent. That time Montreal, Canada hosted the Olympic Games. Three athletes a volleyball player Inna Riscal, handball players Rafiga Shabanova and Ludmila Shubina represented Azerbaijan sport at Montreal Games.

Women volleyball team the captain of which was Inna Riscal met again with Japan team in the final in Montreal. This time Japanese took the superiority. The game ended in Japanese volleyball players' favor. The following medal obtained by Inna Riscal was silver. Thus, Inna Riscal participated in the composition of the USSR national team in four Olympiads in succession and gained four Olympic medals - two gold and two silvers.

Polish athletes won victory in men volleyball competitions. The coach of this team was the graduatee of the Azerbaijan volleyball school, honorary coach of Azerbaijan Lev Milman. It is interesting that coach from Baku Ivan Dyach-kov trained Cuban volleyball players who took bronze medal of the Olympiad in Montreal. One of referees running volleyball competitions in Montreal was Azerbaijani Ramiz Samedov.

Handball events among women were included in the program of the Olympic Games for the first time in Montreal. USSR team performed best of all in these competitions. Two Azeri athletes Rafiga Shabanova and Ludmila Shubina were among women handball players who gained gold medal of the Olympic.

One more representative of Azerbaijan sport school participated in Montreal Olympics. Alexandr Averin champion of the USSR on team persuit competitions, winner of international cycling competition held in Yugoslav participated in Montreal Olympic Games. As Averin moved from Azerbaijan in the year of Olympiad this athlete in the questionnaires of the Olympiad was mentioned as the representative of Russia.
