President of the United States of America Jimmy Carter having taken as a principal cause the intervention of Soviet army to Afghanistan called to boycott Olympiad that was held in the capital of the USSR. Many countries joined to that boycott. And in the result of boycott the number of participant countries and athletes was less than it was expected. But Moscow Games were held on high level.

Five athletes from Azerbaijan were members of the USSR national team in Moscow Olympiad. Larisa Savkina in handball events among women, Vasily Yakusha, Victor Pereversev, Gennady Kryuchkin and Alexandr Lukyanov in rowing, Tatyana Shviganova in field hockey participated in competitions. Soviet women handball team took the first place in Moscow. Azerbaijani athlete Larisa Savkina was also among gold medallists. Vasily Yakusha Azeri athlete occupied the second place took the silver medal in single sculls events of rowing discipline among men. Azeri athletes Victor Pereverzev, Gennady Kryuchkin brought one more silver medal for our country in two place kayak competitions. Tatyana Shviganova became the bronze medallist in field hockey competitions held among women.
