18 athletes from Azerbaijan were included of the USSR national team in Seoul Games. Two of those athletes were fencers llgar Mam-madov and Boris Koretski, and 11 were rowers. Besides, in the composition of the team was a footballer Igor Ponomarev, a skeet shooter Valeri Timokhin, a table tennis player Valentina Popova, a handball player Elina Guseva, and a wrestler Mahaddin Allahverdiyev.
Mahaddin Allahverdiyev, three times World champion, representing Azerbaijan wrestling school unfortunately performed on low level of his possibilities. Our wrestler was defeated by wrestler from Poland in the first bout and took the 4th place in the Olympic Games.
Only two of eleven rowers from Azerbaijan returned the Motherland with medals. Vasily Yakusha, silver medallist of Moscow Olympiad with Alexandr Marchenko (Russia) became owners of bronze medal in Canadian pairs. Alexandr Lukyanov who was in the composition of eight oars rowers took silver medal of Seoul Games.
Valery Timokhin, a skeet shooter passed the first stage of the competition with confidence. However, Valery Timokhin could not show necessary result in the decisive stage.
Azerbaijan tennis school for the first time was represented in Seoul Olympic Games. Our athlete Valentina Popova took the 6th place in table tennis competition.
Soviet women handball players, winners of Montreal and Moscow Olympics missed their positions in Seoul. Elina Guseva from Baku who took part in the composition of the team returned with bronze medal.
In team competitions on fencing Soviet team, which was represented by llgar Mam-madov and Boris Koretski took gold medal.
Soviet footballers won the final match with Brazilian team. Thus, Azerbaijan footballer Igor Ponomaryov acquired the title of the Olympic champion.
Azerbaijan athletes obtained six medals in Seoul Olympiad: llgar Mammadov, Boris Kore-ski (fencing), Igor Ponomaryov (football) gold medal, Alexandr Lukyanov (rowing) silver, Vasily Yakusha (rowing), Elina Guseva (handball) bronze medal.
