On the eve of the XXV Summer Olympic Games in 1992 political map of the world changed. At the end of 1991 USSR collapsed. Union republics gained their independence. A problem aroused for the International Olympic Committee relating to the participation of republics in the forthcoming Olympics. Though republics, which gained their independence, created their Olympic Committees the IOC did not recognize the majority of these Committees, in 1992. Besides, there was another problem. Athletes of countries that gained their independence did not take part in qualification competitions under the flags of their countries. Those countries participated in World and European Championships as members of the USSR national team. Thus, most of the independent countries separated from the USSR had not right to participate as independent states in the Olympic Games. That is why it was decided to permit the team of the Commonwealth of Independent States, existed formally to take part at the Olympic Games that time. National team of former Soviet Republics participated in Barcelona under the IOC flag. As CIS had no anthem and its flag it was decided to raise IOC flag during the awarding ceremony of winners in team competitions, and in individual competitions to raise flag of that country which athlete represented.
There were many debates during the formation of CIS national team which would represent CIS countries in Barcelona. For instance, coaches of the national team on judo wanted to include Georgian G. Vazigashvili winner of CIS Championship of 1991 in 60kg weight category to the delegation of the team. However, Azerbaijani athlete Nazim Husseinov was the champion of Europe which was held in the same year. After long debates a verifying match was held. Judges gave superiority to the Azerbaijani judoka.
Team of CIS entered the stadium under the IOC flag and republics, members of the Commonwealth with 12 flags. 5 athletes - Nazim Husseinov (judo), Valery Belenky (gymnastics), Valery Timokhin (skeet sooting), Valentina Popova (tennis) and Igor Mammadov (fencing) marched under the tricolor flag of Azerbaijan. Nazim Husseinov was the first among our athletes who gained the first gold medal. That was one of the remarkable events in sport history of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani flag and anthem of our independent state was sounded for the first time in that greatest sport competition.
llgar Mammadov, a fencer of Azerbaijan was the winner of Seoul Olympiad. Four years ago he gained gold of Olympics in team competition and took the 10th place in individual championship. Though llgar did not gain medal in Barcelona but improved his result in individual competition and took the 5th place.
Valery Belenky gymnast of Azerbaijan took the Olympic gold medal in team competition. Our athlete took one more medal in individual competition - he gained bronze medal.
