It is known that in times of the Soviet Union certain works were carried out towards the creation of basis for the development of winter sport disciplines in Baku. Figure skating sections were created in Sport Palace constructed and made use in Baku. In those sections trained those who wanted to practice winter sport disciplines. All these facts show that there was a great interest to the winter games in the country. However, Azerbaijan is the southern country, and there is little opportunity for the development of winter sport disciplines. Not with standing, Azerbaijan joined 67 countries participants of the Winter Olympic Games. Our country had right to be represented by 5 athletes in its first Winter Olympic Games. The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games took place on February 7, in Nagano Stadium "Minami Sports Park". More than 50 thousands of spectators attended the opening ceremony.

Yuliya Vorobyova in individual figure skating events among women, Igor Pashkevich in individual figure skating events among men, Inga Radionova and Alexander Anishenko in pair figure skating events and Elbrus Isakov in skiing discipline participated under the flag of Azerbaijan. Our athletes - Yuliya Vorobyova 16th, Igor Pashkevic 16th, pair Inga Radionova and Alexander Anishenko took the 18th place in Nagano Olympic Games.

Elbrus Isakov could not participate in competitions because of his disease.
