Competitions for 78 medals were held in Salt Lake City Games. Those games showed that number of countries participating in Winter Olympic Games increases gradually. Azerbaijan participated in the Winter Olympic Games for the second time. Our country was represented in two sport disciplines - figure skating single and pair and skiing. Azerbaijan athlete Sergey Rilov gained the right to compete in figure skating competitions among men in the World Championship held in Vancouver in 2001 where he took the 13 place.

Cristina Frazer and Igor Lukanin represented our republic in dance skating competitions. Azerbaijani dancing pair having taken the 14 place in the European Championship held in Lausanne on January 2002 gained license for Salt Lake City Games. Elbrus gained license in slalom competitions held in Pampiado, Italy at the end of the passed year.

Sergey Rilov was the first of Azerbaijan athletes joined figure skating competitions. Our athlete performed on low level of his possibility and took the 24 place in competitions athletes from 28 countries participated .

Cristina Frazer and Igor Lukanin participating in dance skating after performance in short, compulsory and free program took the 17 place among representative from 32 countries.

Elbrus Isakov could pass the half of distance in the first attempt on slalom competitions and had to stop his performance.

78 medals were delivered among representatives from 25 countries in those games. In non-official team competition Germany with 35 medals (12 gold, 16 silver, 7 bronze) took the 1 st, Norway the 2nd and America the 3rd place. Athletes of Australia, Croatia, Estonia and China could take medals in Winter Olympic Games for the first time.
