World Youth Games according to its scale, number of participants, organization of games and other showings did not lag behind the Olympic Games. It could be hardly a coincidence that these games are called often the 1 Youth Olympic Games.
Many sport events, festivals accompanied with various mass sport competitions connected with Olympic were held in the history of the Olympic Movement. Among these events the involvement of adolescents and youths to sport, improvement of their mastership were regarded to be significant. The organization and holding of Youth Olympic Days became traditional and periodical event in Europe for the first time. Eleven years passed since the first edition of the European Youth Olympic Days. Within this period much work done, Olympic Days became the great sport holiday.
Since 2000 these competitions have been called European Youth Olympic Festival.
EYOD is held under the patronage and leadership of the European Olympic Committee and auspices of the International Olympic Committee.
The 1st Summer European Youth Olympic Days were hosted in Brussels, Belgium in 1991. More than 2000 representatives from 32 countries of Europe were registered in Olympic Days in Brussels. In the capital of Belgium athletes competed for 74 medals in 9 sport events (athletics, basketball, table tennis, football, judo, tennis, volleyball, gymnastics, swimming). In non-official team competitions France athletes gained majority of medals (31) and took the 1st place. USSR (29) took the llnd, Britain (27) the 111 place in Brussels games. It should be noted that among athletes representing USSR in those days were Azerbaijani judokas. The llnd Summer European Youth Olympic Days were held in Valkensvad, Holland in 1993. 2000 athletes from 43 countries participated in those days.
In Valkensvad young athletes held the fight for 80 medals in 8 sport events (athletics, gymnastics, judo, swimming, tennis, basketball, volleyball and cycling).
In non-official team competitions the first three places were taken by Russia (25 medals-9, 10, 6), Spain (20-9,6,5) and Italy (22-8,6,8).
Azerbaijani athletes participated for the first time in European Youth Olympic Days held in Holland. In 100m run distance among girls our track and field athlete Elvira Jabbarova having shown result in 12,05 seconds took the silver. Athletes of Azerbaijan distinguished in judo competitions held in Olympic Days in 1993. Our judoka Turan Jafarov competed in 60kg weight category won victory over all his opponents and brought gold medal of Valkensvad competitions for our country.
In 46 kg category llham Mammadov won gold in 65kg weight Taleh Sultanov took bronze medal. Thus, our athletes obtained 4 medals (1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze) in the European Youth Olympic Days.
