In the first years of independence the interest to sport in our republic was in a quite low level. The sport had turned into one of the most forgotten fields. Even there were number of objective reasons, there were also a lot of subjective reasons. The fact that sportive areas and gyms belonged to some people, destruction of the sportive equipment in 1991-1993 had turned into some kind of widespread tradition.

After Heydar Aliyev was elected a president of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the attitude to the sport in the country has changed a lot. In different meetings and speeches Heydar Aliyev was bringing the topic of importance of the sport in the life of nation and state into the notice and was reminding this in all directions. Azeri president was always including development of sport into one of the key tasks row of the government. "We think of health of our nation, our people in the republic, their physical, moral health. We think today and we must think about the future of our nation as well. This is the biggest, the most important duty among our goals".

The first step taken by the president of the republic in the field of sport found its reflection in the working out of the sportive areas and gyms according to the destination, instructions on their reconstruction. During the first years of our independence speaking about the situation created in the field of attitude to the sport Azeri president said: "…in 1990-92-93 all the sportive structures in Azerbaijan were destroyed. The biggest stadium of Azerbaijan was brought into terrible condition. Various people opened bazaars, shops there, turned it into the library. You must know that when I was getting familiar with this issue, a lot of things were destroyed in Azerbaijan. However, destruction of the stadium, which was very important for Azeri youth, sport made me sorry indeed.

... I raised an issue that the order must have been placed there. Along with reconstruction, the stadium must have been brought in accordance with the modern, international standards.

... We had cleaned everything there for a short time. At present, the stadium has been reconstructed, it is at the level of the international standards, brings its benefits to Azeri youth.

... See, how easy is to destroy everything in short time. It was necessary to remove all the destroying in short time and bring Azerbaijan into the condition observed today. We created it."

In the years of independence to develop the sport in the country, undoubtedly, the change in the attitude of the government towards the sport must have taken place. Such change had started in the second mid of 1993, during the period of Heydar Aliyev's ruling the country.
