Head of the country enacted special decree concerned with the preparation to Atlanta Games so that Azerbaijan could be represented worthily in the Olympic Movement, in the Olympic Games.

In March 1995 President of the Republic of Azerbaijan signed a decree on rewarding of the sportsmen. According to this decree, Olympic champion Nazim Husseinov was awarded with the order of "Fame", other twelve sportsmen "Progress" order. In the same month in the Hand games palace the show for the sportive games was conducted with participation of Azeri President. Azeri President was speaking in this event. In his speech head of the state spoke about sportive traditions of the country, gave his recommendations for the development of the sport: "At present, in independent Azerbaijan there are more opportunities for the development of sport, wider expansion of the physical culture. Azeri citizens must use these opportunities effectively. Being an independent state, we take part in all social, cultural, political events in the world scale and participation of Azeri sportsmen in various international sportive competitions is very important for our republic".

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan noted the special place that sportive achievements took place in the row of achievements in the various fields of country life. In December 1995 during the meeting with the sportsmen achieved high results in the international competitions, Heydar Aliyev said in connection with it: "In the last few years we had had lots of losses. However, our achievements are enough, too. Among these achievements I can numerate the achievements in the field of sport, international competitions. Their value consists not only of demonstration of high quality of Azeri nation in physical meaning but also recognition of Azerbaijan Republic in the world scale".

Having noted that training of the sportsmen who could have been able to represent the country depended on number of factors, head of the state said that he had never agreed with those who were relating this work only with the sportsman and coach, their activity, supporting the sportive traditions in Azerbaijan, those who considered impossible development of other kinds of sport in Azerbaijan. He said in one of his speeches: "I was worried why our sportsmen couldn't get high names? We were given different explanations. Some people even thought as if due to the fact that Azeri nation, Azeri people didn't have rich sportive traditions, wasn't very big nation, didn't have big history, Azeri sportsmen couldn't have got supreme names. Sometimes they were saying for instance Azeri athletes could have got high ranks in wresting but not in other kinds of sport.

Indeed, I didn't want to agree with such opinions and was saying that they weren't right. Our nation, our people are very healthy from the physical standpoint, they are very healthy. That is why it is impossible that our athletes couldn't gain high results".

Heydar Aliyev who was seeing the development of other kinds of sport in Azerbaijan through gaining experience of other countries in sportive fields, strengthening of the international ties in the sportive field, kind attitude of famous sportsmen and sportive masters, heads of sportive organizations towards our country was always carrying out the work in this direction. Even in the period of number of various problems in the country he was always paying a lot of attention to the issues concerned with the sport, gave instructions and recommendations in conduction of some or other work.
