In January 1996 Azeri President took part in the ceremony dedicated to the opening of central Olympic building and 60th anniversary of the sportive-health "Neftchi" center. In the speech during that ceremony head of the country emphasized the importance of taking care about the sport in Azerbaijan, bringing it to the high potential movement, its development: "That is why in the last few years we, Azeri state, in spite of all the troubles, have considered important to spend required sums for the development of sport in the independent Republic of Azerbaijan and after that we would be conducting such measures, too".

On 23 December 1995 Azeri President received president of the International Amateur Boxing Association Anwar Chawdhry, highly esteemed his visit to our country, exchange his views with the guest on the existing situation of Azeri boxing, its future perspectives. Having specified that the special attention would be always paid to the development of boxing in the country, head of the state expressed his conformity that Mr. Chawdhry would do his best to assist in the development of Azeri boxers, development in this kind of this kind of sport. Anwar Chawdhry was coming to Azerbaijan in 1998-2002 and during these visits was holding meetings with Azeri President.

New development stage of Azeri box has started since this period. In 1996 in Atlanta alumnus if Azeri boxing school participated in the Olympic Games for the first time, even their first debut didn't result with the medal, generally their participation was quite successful. In 1999 for the first time European boxing championship among the juniors was held in Azerbaijan. Our junior boxers had gained impressive successes in this championship. Azeri president sent his congratulation letter to the championship participants, received European Amateur Boxing Association president Emil Jechev headed delegation.

Azeri boxers won five licenses for Sydney Olympic Games. This must have been considered as very big success of our boxing school. In Sydney our boxers were defending the honor of our sport worthily. Azeri sportsman won the first Olympic medal in the boxing competition. Groundlessness of opinions that there are no traditions in concrete kind of sport couldn't bring any result had proved itself. In 2001 world boxing championship among the juniors was held in Azerbaijan. Again our junior sportsmen won big successes. Development of any kind of sport in the country plays its special role in the development of this kind of sport. From this standpoint, International Amateur Boxing Association highly esteemed attention and care for the development of sport by Azeri President, awarded Heydar Aliyev with the highest reward. EABA President Anwar Chawdhry's assistance in the development of boxing in our republic also found its reflection. Mr. Chawdhry was awarded with the order "Fame" by the decree of Azeri President.

President of the republic was always drawing to the center of attention the importance of Olympic Games among all international competitions, was always approaching to it with special care, was requiring such an approach from all those who were engaged in this field. Heydar Aliyev was always considering important necessity of carrying out the works in the republic in this field, was always considering high the Olympic Games, development of Olympic Movement. He said: "Olympic Games interest the countries all over the world, unite them here. Every country tries to be represented in the Olympic Games". Heydar Aliyev always suggested to estimate objectively the results of any kind of sport, emphasized that participation of the sportsman in the Olympic Games was high achievement by itself. In 1996 during his meeting with sportive delegation leaving for Atlanta Games he said: "It is not an ordinary representative delegation, just select as many sportsman as you can, the sportsman delegation can't be selected neither by the government nor the nation. In order to obtain the right to participate in the Olympic Games the required achievements should be obtained. If these do not exist, no matter how much Azeri government, Azeri President does, the person who hasn't achieved any result can't be in the membership of the representative delegation. That is why this representative delegation of 23 persons demonstrates the abilities of Azerbaijan Republic in the field of sport. …Your participation, i.e. participation of the team of the Republic of Azerbaijan in XXVI Olympic Games is an eminent event by itself, the achievements you will gain there - are the second part of the issue".

Of course, this second party was always at the center of attention of the president of the Republic. He was always giving instructions on representation Azeri sport worthily to the sportsmen, raising popularization of the country, was sincerely evaluating the realities, appealing to the people responsible in the development of sport to choose the ways bringing to the high results. President said to the sportsmen returned from Atlanta with silver medal in August 1996: "We were sending you to Atlanta with big hopes, wishes and undoubtedly, we were waiting for higher results. …I am saying again, we were waiting for many things. However, if we look to the situation in real spectrum, we should evaluate the situation correctly. I think, your achievements according to the realities are very high".

Realities of 1996 in the field of sport were like this. Naturally, head of the country esteemed the results gained in Atlanta and was drawing attention to the importance of carrying out the required works to achieve more results in future, was putting this duty in front of the sportsmen, as well as people responsible in the development of sport. Along with it, the main duty, weight was laid upon himself and he was saying: "Being a President of Azerbaijan, I am giving a work and I am confirming it now that I am taking upon myself the care about the sport. I have taken upon myself the care about Azeri youth and you may be confident that you will always be feeling this care".

During the meeting with the members of national Olympic team participating in Atlanta Games president of the Republic emphasized importance of preparation to the next Olympic Games since present, gave his instructions on conduction of the preparation on the basis of special document and said: "In the document the work for the given four-year period is specified. I am waiting for your proposals and you may be confident that the required decrees will be enacted, decree will be approved and the required sums will be spent".
