International relations play very important role in the development of Olympic Movement. Correct formation of the international relations opens big perspectives for the recognition of our country in the world scale along with wider development of the sport, stimuli of participation of our republic in the Olympic Movement.

Due to the reason that National Olympic Committee established in 1992 didn't pay required attention at the expansion of the international ties in its activity and as a result of it, Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee couldn't join the family of the Worldwide Olympia until 1997. New administration of the National Olympic Committee has been paying special attention to this field since the first days. President of the committee Ilham Aliyev, first vice-president of the NOC, minister of youth and sport Abulfaz Garayev, secretary general of the committee Agajan Abiyev were participating in the 26th Assembly of the European Olympic Committee held in Stockholm in November 1997. In the assembly with participation of the reps of 48 states the main issue that was discussed consisted of election of new members of the European Olympic Committee's administration and Executive Committee. Reps of 15 states were in the membership of the Executive Committee.

During visit to Stockholm president of European Olympic Committee Jacque Rogge received Azeri representative delegation. Jacque Rogge perceived the news on being elected Honorable Doctor of Azerbaijan Physical Culture Institute with great feeling. During this reception the issues of cooperation between the parties were widely discussed.

In Stockholm president of the National Olympic Committee Ilham Aliyev also met with the president of International Olympic Committee Chuan Antonio Samaranch. In the meeting views on the work of the Republican National Olympic Committee, international relations, perspective plans were exchanged. During the visit Ilham Aliyev held meetings with number of presidents of NOC of the European states. It can be said that president of the National Olympic Committee Ilham Aliyev laid basis of development of the international relations of the NOC during his visit to Stockholm.
