BAKU IS THE CENTER OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS

The President of the Azerbaijan Republic Heydar Aliyev in one of his speeches mentioned: "Many years ago, from century we had our wrestlers, archers, who were demonstrating their physical abilities in different sport disciplines." However, for obvious reasons they were not able to demonstrate their abilities world wide, therefore they stayed in the country. This obvious reason is dependence of the country. It was impossible to hold high-level international competitions in Azerbaijan while it was a part of the Soviet Union. Azerbaijan got this opportunity only after becoming an independent country. However, it is not so easy to make use of this opportunity. Armenia's aggression towards Azerbaijan and falsification of truth were causing difficulties on the way of other teams coming to this country. Scandals were born on issues concreting organization of International competitions in the country, which is still at war.

In 1997 the National Olympic Committee realized that it is important to increase country's prestige in world sport and prove that the Azerbaijan Republic as an independent country is able to organize and hold international competitions. In order to achieve this goal it was necessary to strengthen the international tournaments and competitions. International Tournament devoted to the President of the International Amateur Boxing Association Anwar Chowhdry became first such event. This traditional tournament gave way to European Cadet Boxing Championship, and World Championship to be held in Azerbaijan. Strengthening and establishment of international relations has resulted the organization of international competitions in other sport disciplines as well. Generally, the National Olympic Committee has completed another task. The myth of impossibility of holding international competitions collapsed. Baku has started to get known as one after another. Lets review international competitions organized by or with assistance of the National Olympic Committee of the Azerbaijan Republic.
