IV European Cadet Boxing Championship was held in Baku Sports Games Palace from 1 to 9 August. The athletes from 24 European countries - Azerbaijan, Belarus, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia, Norway, Poland, Rumania, Russia, Scotland, Slovakia, Sweden, Turkey and Ukraine participated in this championship. 132 boxers from these countries competed for the medals of the European Championship.
The opening ceremony of the championship took place on August 1. The flag of the European Amateur Boxing Association was brought to the stadium and hoisted under the solemn march sounds. Minister for Young and Sport of the Republic Abulfaz Garayev read Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev's congratulation letter to the participants of the IV European Boxing Championship. The chairman of the Organizing Committee, I deputy minister for Young and Sport Vagif Aliyev greeted the participants. Then the President of the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan Republic also welcomed the participants. He appreciated the competition as significant and remarkable event in social, political and sport life of the country. he mentioned that rapid development of sport in Azerbaijan for the last years, concern shown to sport and athletes, created conditions, successful participation of our athletes in the international competitions created opportunity to hold the European Championship in Azerbaijan. Ilham Aliyev also expressed his gratitude to the President of the European Amateur Boxing Association Emil Jechev for his confidence. At the end his speech Ilham Aliyev wished the athletes delight of victory.

Competitions started. Cadet boxers joined the fight for the victory in 13 weight divisions.
European Championship on boxing among cadets lasted nine days. The final competitions were held on August 9, the last day of the championship.
The President and Vice-President of the European Amateur Boxing Association approved the level of arranging and the holding of the events. President of the Association Emil Jechev once more especially emphasized the organization of the Azerbaijani Championship on higher level in comparison with previous ones. He appreciated the organization and the holding of the championship by the state, National Olympic Committee, Ministry for Youth and Sport as well as state sports institutions positively.
119 fights in 13 weight divisions were held in European Championship held among cadets in Baku. Azerbaijani boxers having performed very well at the championship justified hopes of boxing amateurs. Our boxers for the first time won nine medals (4 gold, 1silver, 4 bronze) in this great event. It should be mentioned helped much in the gaining of these accomplishments. However, our cadet boxers won these medals in hard and strenuous fight and in accordance with team score took the II place after Russia. The third place was occupied by Ukraine.
Azerbaijan President Heydar Aliyev received European Amateur Boxing Association President Emil Jechev and Vice-President of the federation during the turn of the championship.
Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee arranged official party in Baku Entertainment Center on honor of the participants of the IV European Championship on August 3.
President of the European Amateur Boxing Association, representatives of the teams participated in the championship, referees, representatives of sport society of our republic, ministers and other officials attended the reception.
