THE I WORLD CADET BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP. BAKU - 2001

In 1999 the European Championship in Baku was organized on high level. As a result the International Amateur Boxing Association decided to organize the first World Boxing Championship among cadets in Baku in 2001.

On October 13, 2001 132 young leather glove masters from 21 countries arrived to Azerbaijan for the joining the 1st World Championship of the cadets. Besides teams from Cuba, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan who participated with complete delegation in the championship participated athletes from Greece, Belarus, India, Indonesia, South Africa, Slovakia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Estonia, Latvia, Uzbekistan, Mongolia and Hungary.

On 13 October the ceremony of the opening of the 1st World Boxing Championship among cadets took place in Baku Sport Games Place. The ceremony of the opening began with parade of athletes from countries came to participate in the championship. Then the state anthem of Azerbaijan was sounded. The flag of the International Amateur Boxing Association was brought to the Sport Palace under sounds of the solemn march. Bronze prizewinner of Sydney Olympic Games on boxing Vugar Alakbarov raised the flag of IABA. The congratulation letter of the President Azerbaijan Republic Heydar Aliyev was read. Later the word was given to the President of the National Olympic Committee Ilham Aliyev. Then the President of the National Olympic Committee Ilham Aliyev while delivering his speech greeted the participants and quests and wished the athletes successes. The President of the International Amateur Boxing Association Anwar Chowdhry declared the competitions open.

132 young boxers from 21 countries of the world competed for the medals in 12 kg weight divisions in the championship that lasted from 11 to 21 October. In the world championship in non-official team competitions athletes of Russia having won 10 medals (3 gold, 3 silver, 4 bronze), and Ukraine team with 6 medals (2 gold, one silver, 3 bronze) took the third place.

During the competitions Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev received the President of the International Amateur Boxing Association Anwar Chowdhry, president of the European Amateur Boxing Association and other officials of these associations. The highest award of the International Amateur Boxing Association was presented to the Azerbaijan President. Heydar Aliyev conferred International Amateur Boxing Association President Anwar Chowdhry with "Fame" Order.
